About Freeman's Fish Market
Located at 155 Maplewood Ave, Maplewood, NJ 07040, Freeman's Fish Market operates as a seafood market serving Maplewood in New Jersey. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it. Besides its main category, the business also describes itself as seafood wholesaler, so it may cover more than the name suggests.
Store size varies enormously, from a small corner grocery with a few aisles to a full supermarket chain location in Maplewood with a bakery, seafood counter and food court under one roof. Sales and promotions are often posted in-store or in a weekly flyer rather than online, so prices listed on a website may be out of date. Seafood markets sell live and on-ice product and can usually clean or prepare fish on request for a small fee. Specialty food stores in New Jersey may focus narrowly on one category, like a butcher, a rice and dry goods shop, or an import store, so calling ahead to confirm stock for a specific item saves a wasted trip.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. The most common schedule is 8 am–7 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (973) 763-9363. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. Its website is freemansfishmarket.com, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.
Customers rate it 4.5 out of 5 on Google across 95 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded seafood markets in Maplewood.
Maplewood is in New Jersey, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Maplewood is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across New Jersey's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Freeman’s is a local gem. You can tell they source their seafood daily because the quality is consistently 10/10. Their salmon and scallops are always pristine, and the prepared foods are delicious for a quick dinner. It’s worth every penny for the freshness and the expert service you get every time you walk in.

Freeman’s is the only place I trust when it comes to fish and seafood — truly. My husband and I go at least once a month (even more in the summer) to pick up their sushi-grade salmon and tuna so we can make our own poke bowls at home. The quality is always incredible — fresh, clean, and consistently top-tier. Shawn, Reggie, and everyone behind the counter are genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and always willing to answer questions. And beyond the fresh fish… if you’re lucky enough to catch it, their chowders and seafood salad are next-level. (Make sure you check out their fridge/ready-made food by the register) So good. They’re also such a staple in the community — the BEST lobster rolls during Maplewoodstock/ summer events and at the Maplewood pool!

True asset to town. Small but mighty. Always fresh. Always friendly. Besides picking up fresh seafood to cook at home the premade catering items are amazing. Shrimp cocktail tray our favorite.

My son requested seafood as a reward for working hard during the spring semester. I told him to wait until we could visit the fishmonger in Maplewood since the quality would be higher there than the places where we normally shop. Josh said the salmon cake, cooked shrimp and cocktail sauce were good.

This is a great neighborhood small business that we cherish and frequent at least once a week. Maybe not the cheapest way to acquire seafood, but you get what you pay for, and the quality is fantastic (they often have sushi grade options). That said, you can find affordable options as well, it just depends on the fish you're buying. Excellent customer service that feels like family. Highly recommended.
